killing cone?

Just grab one when you're driving through a construction zone, or they sell them at HD too. Cheap version and a lot lighter.

haha, I was just about to say that

Be sure and slow WAY down first... Otherwise you will be back on BYC asking where to buy or how to make an Arm Sling...

I used a manufactured killing cone at first but found them to be more trouble than they're worth. A friend or a piece of rope holding the feet seemed to work better. Funny, the birds don't seem to like their heads shoved into a killing cone. If you want to use one though, the old milk jug with both ends cut off looks like it works well.

I used some hardware cloth left over from building my coop. About a 3 foot by 2 foot section of it, rolled into a fat cone. Worked fine.

Call me old fashioned, but I don't advocate stealing anything, even off the side of the road, unless it has been put out for trash pickup. I'd stop by your local Dept. of Transportation or Dept. of Motor Vehicles and ask if they have any old cones you could have or pay for. I don't want anyone taking anything of mine, so I don't take anything which is not mine... JMHO.

I purchased two killing cones from someone here on this site; I'm sure you can find them through a search. You have to gently lower the chicken down and reach up with your other hand to feed the head/neck through - but they work very well.

I recently assisted a friend in harvesting turkeys, and she tied them by their feet on a rope hanging from a tree. After witnessing the amount of blood thrown all around, I was very glad I had the cones.

If you don`t want to tick off your local dept. of highways...you can pick up traffic cones at any safety supply store. Ours was $5.99... we trimmed the top and it works fabulously.

I think we were all kidding about that. Those cones on the road do serve a purpose plus I don't believe in stealing anything.

I used a plastic feed sack with a corner cut off. I would like some killing cones though and a really sharp knife. I had a butcher process a few after I processed 13. He put them in cones and just wacked their heads off with a knife. No effort at all, put the blade to their head and it cut through like it was butter. Did the same thing when he cut them open. I asked him how often he sharpened it and he said once a day. He processes about 500 birds at a time. He said it depends on who's using the knife. As long as it doesn't hit the cutting table or bone he is just fine.

I make mine out of aluminum coil. Roll it up into a cone, put two screws through the lap into a board/tree/whatever and then trim as needed to for a bird to fit. Mine didn't cost me a dime, I had the coil leftover from construction projects, and work great for backyard purposes.
