I was feeding my dogs just now and out of the corner of my eye I see movement and this rather large (for a coyote) coyote running away from the house (we live in the woods) and I couldn't see if he had something in his mouth, so I ran out immediately and PHEW all my chickens are safe in their pen! I hadn't locked them up yet (here in AK it's light until 8:30p right now).. but they were in early THANK GOD. The coyote walked right by, very close.. but possibly came from behind my house and not the side with the coop. The electric fencing has is ON! I know things are especially hungry now.. need to lock them up earlier. Just wanted to share my relief!

Glad everyone was ok.

Be very careful and watch your back. When coyotes start coming that close to humans it is because they are very very hungry or are very sick(rabid, mange)!! If you have really young kids keep an eye out. Very seldom will a coyote attack a human but if they are desperate enough they will. If your state/city laws allow it I would shoot it if it comes on your property again like that. My neighbor keeps ours under control. Whenever one keeps roaming the neighborhood he knocks em dead!

Yes, here in Alaska there is an open season so to say on coyotes. Thank you for the warning! I hadn't taken that into consideration (about the coyotes health). No kids, but I do have two small blind beagles. I watch them closely (in a fenced in area when out). My hubs said the same thing. I'm gonna have to shoot it if I see it again. I'm on watch tonight. It's way too close for me. I've got nearly 50 birds that'll be out in summer. We usually just hear the coyotes and wolves.. but I even saw a wolf cross the road last week... maybe getting desperate.

This coyote was alone (as far as I could tell). Which I found interesting as I always hear them in groups. Hope it doesn't bring it's friends

You guys are great.. thanks for the support!

If its a she and she has pups she will need to eat alot and sounds like you have a buffet.

How about me and a friend come to alaska and take care of yout coyote problem and you take us salmon fishing? sounds fair, lol

HAHA! Deal!

Yes, we kill the hawks (but not the bald eagles) and I've shot at some bears... my neighbor killed a grizzly for getting into it's coop! Then he had to call fish and game and their was in investigation (always is here when a bear is killed off season) yada yada.. good God, what a mess. That neighbor we can tell and we look out for each other and call when we see something.. my other neighbors.. got all pissy when they heard we tried to kill a gos hawk... come on'...... it's the hawk or my chickens.. I have a feeling the coyote is going to be harder to get. I was on watch last night and locked the flock up 3 hours early just in case... nothing yet.. It didn't know I saw him/her before... we'll see.
