My Husband and I have been contemplating getting chickens for a while now. We're extremely limited for space, less than 1/4 of an acre. I've had chickens before but it was ages ago and they were free range on anywhere from 20 to 100 acres.

I settled on Rhode Island Reds, since I am most familiar with them. We're in the Central Valley of CA, so we're opting for an open air coop. Extreme heat will be the major factor.

I have 20 chicks arriving on the 26th of this month. I purchased an oversized brooder plate and an enclosed playpen that is approximately 17 square ft.

We plan on keeping 10 of the chickens. We will cull any roosters and give the remaining ones to my Brother in law.

I am sure I'll have many questions. This site is an amazing resource.
