I looked through a list of NE Texas snakes and to me it looks like this one.

It is a ratsnake. I thought Texas ratsnake, but whichever variety it is, it will eat eggs and chicks too if it can get to them. I find at least one in the nest boxes every single year.

that is an amazing snake! it will keep mice away from your coop. make a rock pile away from your coop so they hang out away from the birds.

snakes are very important to the ecosystem, please reconsider killing snakes that won't harm you.

I always keep mine alive. Never had mice.

I know they are very beneficial. But, also very costly and frustrating.

Thanks to everyone for your help in identifying it. Most of what I see have small yellow specks on a black body or just black. This was the first that looked like this one.

My rat snakes here look exactly like the one in the photo. I think they vary slightly in different parts of the state. Just found one day before yesterday in a fence post smashy-hammery-long-thing (forgot the proper name for it) it looked identical to the one in your photo, except it was alive and thoroughly pissed from being used to knock T-posts into the ground.

There are a lot of variations in the color of rat snakes, but that's what it is. I get one with a lot of red like that every so often.

I've also had grey or sometimes nearly black rat snakes.
This guy was mostly grey with some rust. Opened my front door and there he was hanging above my head. Couldn't get a good photo because he retreated.
