Hey all! I was here a couple years ago. Got some chicks and when they almost ready to go outside when the dogs got to the brooder (a guina pig cage) and killed them all.

I'm starting again. Just got 3 chicks from the local farmers co op. 2 rir and 1 barred rock. They are safe in a downstairs bathroom we are remodeling. Their brooder is a bathtub (got the idea here on chat) plus I lock the door. They are soo cute!

I even got a new coop and run, a eglu. It is here and set up in the front yard. I can't wait until they can go outside and have fun! I got some netting too for when I'm out so they can run around even more.

Does anyone have dogs that killed thier chickens? I would like to one day put the coop in the backyard but am worried about the dogs. I have 4, an akita, pit bull, husky and beagle. The akita and husky are the ones that killed the chickens. I got the eglu because it is preditor proof, or close.

Any ideas?

You may want to check out the Predators/Pests section for ideas about your dogs.

The only way to be safe with your dogs and chickens is to keep them separated by a fence the dogs or chickens cannot get through, under, or over. And the mesh on the fence has to be small enough the chickens cannot reach through the fence with their heads, which they will do to get to the grass.

Thanks all

I will see how the front yard works. That might just have to be their home.

from Oregon. I have 5 dogs, and the only one that wants to kill the chickens is my Pit, he's loving in every other way, but he has so much fun chasing the chickens, and if he had a chance to catch one, I know he'd kill it in a second. You'll just have to be careful, my dogs are house dog's, so when the chickens are free ranging I make sure to keep the pit inside. Good Luck.
