I raised her from a chick and as she matured her legs began to grow much larger than my other hens legs. She is 9 months old now and is smaller in body that the others and hasn't laid an egg. I've tried to find out what is wrong with her but no one seems to know. Now she is not eating or drinking and I think she is hurting. I have come to believe she has something like arthritis because every time it get rainy she get worse then if it dries up she is some better. I don't want to see her like this any more so will euthanize her. Because I don't know what is wrong with her she will not be our dinner. Can someone please tell me the kindest way?
Thank you in advance....

We have found that a sharp hatchett and a tree stump work the best for us.. Sorry your having to do this..

yes, I agree no suffering with the hatchet, but someone has to hold her or make a culling cone.

we usually wrap their feet with electrical tape that way they just lay there. Then we also have a bucket ready to put the chicken into headless first. keeps them from flapping all over and keeps the blood in the bucket too.

You know it depends on how emotionally attached you are to her. I don’t know how much a veterinarian would charge in your area, but where I am it would be $7 dollars to put her to sleep. It would be worth it to me.

I have had to euthanize a chicken before. We put her in a large pot with a lid on top of 4 bricks . Then we put in equal amounts of Vineager and Baking Soda . We wrapped her in a towel so she wouldn't struggle and in about 10 min. it was all over. I hope this helps . I am sorry you have to do this.

A good pellet gun and shoot right behind the comb.

The hatchet is the best for a full grown hen. I had to do it last summer to one of my girls. Took me about an hour to do the deed, but her suffering was over. It's not easy when you raise them from day old chicks, but it isn't right to let them suffer. Good luck! This is the part of raising chickens I truly hate.
