I have a CBBQ hen that has developed a loud wheeze that she mostly does at night. I noticed that she would do it when I would come up to the cage when it was dark in my room (I guess I would kind of frighten/worry her), and now she does it nearly all night long. My other birds (incl her mate) are fine, have exhibited no signs of respiratory trouble. Their bedding (pine or cedar shavings) is changed every other week.

The hen eats, drinks, and screws her mate just fine. I can't seem to find anything online that matches her symptoms. She doesn't appear to be breathing with her beak open, no nasal discharge either. Any ideas? I'd have to treat her at home since there are no vets in my area who are familiar with poultry :(

Pine and cedar shavings aren't great for animals respiratory systems. Cedar being the worse of the two. Respiratory issues are extremely hard to diagnose but I would start by changing the bedding and see if anything improves. Keep a close eye for other symptoms to develop that may make it easier to diagnose. Pay attention to her food and water intake, feces, if she's puffed up, etc.

Below is some more discussion of shavings as bedding.
