I have been wanting to get chickens for a LONG time now and I found Kirby, I have studied bird shows, different breeds, etc. for months and this is my first time actually owning one - you nor anyone else on here knows me or Kirby. It is my chicken, and I love him - he's defiantly not in pain therefore no abuse is done. Your personal opinion is just that - YOURS! He is not lonely because he spends the majority of the day outside with me and the other hens.

I would also like to say once more: He has hens that he will be moving in with in about a week or two.

I'm just glad that Kirby found an owner that is willing to care for him. so many of these dyed chicks go to homes that have no idea how to care for a chicken and they die very young.

I have been getting a crap load of BULL because Kirby is pink, he's a NORMAL chick just like any other chick that is hatched from an egg.

It's not illegal where I live, and the majority of the people that where buying them here where adults, not to mention the part of the state I live in is nothing but farming.
You have no right to say that I am a poor owner, obviously you do not know who I am.
The dye is harmless, especially since it is organic.
Also, I would like to mention that I have seen SEVERAL post where others on here had dyed chicks, and I did not see anything negative posted.
Just because these chicks attract younger children does not mean that I am a child wanting a cute little animal, I really don't care what color Kirby is, and as I said your personal opinion is just that - YOURS.
If I was a poor owner just like everyone else out their who bought these at easter time, Kirby would be dead.

I would also like to quote what someone said to me about a week ago:

"I don't understand why people have such a problem with this. Really, it's not even a big deal. Who cares what you do to your pet as long as you're not hurting it. And we eat chickens anyways, so the heartfelt "OMG" is just a bunch of bull. Would someone be mad if they were going to eat the thing? No, so I see no reason why anyone would call this abuse, or cruelty. CLEARLY, he's okay.

I can't believe the ignorance and childish nature of some people today and I'm really sorry you have to deal with these people now."

If you're worried about sneezing, it might be brooder temperature... that is the most frequent cause of sinusitis in young chicks. maybe outside time was a little cold for him or something. I had a little incadent of sneezing due to a 65watt bulb in the heat lamp put there by mistake. caught it early, one chick that got the sniffles for about 24hours a hallogen light cleared it right up. here's a picture of the one with the sniffles.

Kirby's growing fast. I've got a leghorn myself, but it doesn't act nearlly as sweet as your's seem to. I'm going through the "Owww, the big scary hand" faze with her now.. her name is daisy.

Thank you for your positive reply, and answer to my question.

He hasn't been sneezing lately, from what I've noticed, he's been under close supervision - but I will check into the brooder temperature, it usually runs in the 80's all day outside here - so I don't think it's quite too cold out.
Your little girl is adorable.

Kirby has started developing the "roo attitude" he's becoming very independent but still follows me around.
He does something new everyday, he's started testing out his wings yesterday, at first I though something was wrong because he was just running in circles flapping around. lol. And today he started dust bathing, which I have never seen him do before.​

Avla, I think a lot of us just hate the whole idea of dyed chicks and you're getting some flack for that. Like I said earlier, most people that buy dyed chicks aren't buying a chicken, they are buying something "cute for the kids" Its kind of like everyone buying dalmations after the movie 101 dalmations came out. They don't really think about what happens to it after its no longer cute

I personally don't think the stores should be allowed to sell dyed chicks. That doesn't mean that I can't be happy for you and Kirby though.
As to the whole "chickens are flock animals", there's plenty of other people that have a chicken in the house as a pet on this forum.

Kirby is very cute. I like the pink fuzz & his white feathers coming in.
My co-workers reply when I told we got 3 chicks -- 'You got them b/c they were cute right?'
Yeah, b/c I didn't study chicken ownership for a yr. & figure how to do this before hand.

Plus he won't be pink forever. His regular feathers will grow out and he will lose the pink color that he has now. Sounds like he has a great home to take care of him. Like someone else said at least you are taking care of him unlike other people do with the dyed chicks that they buy as a novelty during Easter. Keep up the good work with Kirby and he will be a great Rooster and have a harem of hens to hang out with.
