Recently a little black kitten has wandered up and seems to be trying to make its home with my chickens and living under the egg house.
It seems to be eating their poop and possibly feed but not sure about the latter.
I plan to trap it and bring it to my grandmother's house but when it comes to my flock's reaction to the kitten's presence I find something very strange.

I would have assumed that my rooster would find the kitten as a threat and chase it down every chance given, but he doesn't, and I am quite disappointed in him.
Instead, when the kitten comes close to the feed, two hens jump and chase it back under the egg house.
The rooster seems to become offended by this and starts chasing the hens around the pen...
Then he does his little dance where he drops one wing and runs in circles around the hens.

Why does he do this? Is he just confused? Does he not want the hens to chase the kitten away?

You can probably tell that I think about chicken behaviors a lot and try to understand them, lol

Any help or input would be appreciated. I just want my rooster to be more protective of his hens instead of a random kitten.

I'm guessing its a displacement behavior. He gets mad at kitten, hens chase off kitten, he runs at the hens mad, and then madness turns to love.

He's probably a wuss or just lazy and doesn't feel like chasing off the kitten, so instead he tries to woo the girls.

When he sees the chicken, does he make a call or something? Our roosters don't really run for cover but if they see a raven they make a distinct call and freeze

Yes, when he sees the kitten come out he stands tall and says "burrBOOBOObooboo," which I believe means "There's something weird over there!" since when he does that call the hens stop and look around for a second. They go back to pecking around and ignore the kitten but the roo stays still and stares at it. Maybe he just doesn't realize its a threat? I've never seen him be aggressive towards possible threats other than my little dogs.

Once, a little dog from down the road ran into my yard and chased down a hen and got a hold of her. The roo jumped onto my truck, stood on the windshield wipers and made this very strange call, very loudly, repetitively, at my front door for about a minute until I walked outside. I looked at him oddly then walked to the side when I heard the commotion and I noticed as I was walking by he turned his head crowing at me.

Maybe he expects me to protect the hens for him?
