Kitty Litter Nest Box Question

I kinda differ with you on the secretive part. They may prefer it, but it not being secretive isn't going to keep them from laying. My nest boxes are across the yard away from the coop, and on my back porch (outside porch). Just outside my back door. I have two nest boxes sitting up on an old rabbit grooming table (those are the preferred boxes and they are enclosed. (Round hole in front) Then, down a ways I have some rabbit carry cases stacked, and on top of those are two more nest boxes, and those are open on top. I have seven hens who are laying. Out of those two seem to prefer the open boxes. So, I hope it helps. My set up is not fancy by any means. Lol no secrets here

You just don't want them going out in the brush to lay. I just had one come in with 13 chicks. Unplanned for, other than I was aware she was off setting somewhere.

These are the nest boxes that I have (this is a copied photo). I think they are okay my bantams seem to like them but my Ameraucanas and my Maran have no interest and they are the closest to laying.

My coop has six nesting boxes. I apparently have two of my ten chickens that have started to lay. They both use the same box. I gathered one egg at 10:30 yesterday morning and a second at 11:30.

Long after the days of 100 hens and 12 nest boxes, I built a coop for 10 hens with 4 nests. They used 2. I built one for 16 hens and 3 nests. They used 1.
