Cull him or keep him?
I should have asked this three weeks ago, when he was born, but I really didn't think he'd survive. At first I thought he was missing the outer toes. I later found them folded under his feet. He seems to be getting along okay, but he does have traction issues on some surfaces. He's a bantam Cochin from Steve2495"s gold barred project, and I'm very curious to see how he grows up I don't want my selfishness to obliterate my compassion for his suffering, but I don't really know if he's suffering. He's getting along well with his Serama hatchmates.

I don't know if it is to late to do this, but why not tape the bottom and the top toes in the correct position? Even if that does not work, maybe he will still be able to get around fine - he sure looks perky enough. I guess you just would not want to breed him - though I do not know if crooked toes have anything to do with genes.

I've tried band-aid orthopedics, but they stick to his feathers and the others pick them off. The breeder told me that it was an incubation problem, not genetic, so I might breed. I don't know how he's going to "get it done" if it's a boy. I named him Igor. Is that mean?

its not mean, its great! Don't cull! Maybe can clip the feathers and then use ducktape?

I have a chick with this exact same issue, the smaller outer toe is folded underneath so he is walking on it. I have tried making him shoes but they never stay on. I'm keeping up with it though and will come up with something if it kills me! My guy, while not walking normally, is getting around the brooder fine, eating and drinking, and the others are not picking on him so I'm going to keep him for now and just keep trying to find some shoes that stick. I have been massaging his feet every day

(don't even do that for my husband!) and giving him extra vits - i don't know if that's helping at all, but I feel better for doing it.

Good luck with your guy!

I tried the tape, I tried everything.

I have a little black Ameraucana roo and a Salmon Fav pullet with this problem. The are 17 weeks and still doing famously. Luckily it's only on one foot on both of them so they can still hang on to the roost. I don't know what they'd do if it were both feet.

What about using that "MOLE SKIN" Dr. Scholls uses for blisters and stuff? It is designed for human feet which sweat?

Igor isn't mean.

Quasimoto might be mean but only if you meant it as Quasimoto and not named after the character in the Hunchback of notre Dame.

He's the same size as his buddies, and he's a little slower, but they get along fine. I don't know if I can spread his feet out anymore to put boots on him. I know that I should have taken care of it right away, and I did, halfheartedly. I helped him out of his shell the same time I helped an EE chick out, and the other guy didn't make it. I just assumed he's be climbing that rainbow bridge shortly, too. I'm sure glad chickens can't sue!
