I agree on the pellets suggestion also. My girls were doing the same thing, but since switching to pellets, I go through half as much feed as I used to.
When they kick the pellets out of the feeder, it is much easier for them to see on the ground than crumbles are, and they are more likely to eat it. Chickens are natural ground foragers, so it is instinct to knock their food on the ground and scratch around in it. They are just looking for that super tasty tidbit that they never wind up finding.
