knots on face and head

I have about 50 chickens more or less. They are and have been Free Roaming for years now. I have never had this problem come up. One of my hens hatched out some chicks and I have noticed since they are getting bigger that they have some awful looking knot like things on their heads, face, eyes. Two of them cannot see because it has covered their eyes completely. I have caught all but two so far and have them in a closed in crate. What is this? Do I need to , well the best word I can come up with is....put them out of their misery? I don't want this to get in too all my chickens. PLEASE HELP
