As a Total Newbie I'm finding a ton of helpful advice on this BB.

I've read here that a hen's comb will darken when she's getting ready to start laying.
I have 5 3mo old pullets, 2 of whom are Black Stars.
Since I've read here these 2 could start laying as soon as next month

I was wondering when/if I'd see this change in their combs.

Both still have little baby combs, one slightly larger than the other.
This girl also has slightly larger wattles, although none of them have anything worth talking about there either.
The other 3 - 2 Delawares & 1 Houdan - still have just little eeny-beeny (<technical term?) combs too.

Am I looking at normal development?
Are my girls backward? Do they need to ride the Poultry Short Bus?

Generally look for eggs anywhere between 15-22 weeks. Yes, their comb and wattles will gradually turn a darker red as they near sexual maturity.

One day you will walk into their coop and nearly step on that first egg it will be such a surprise! Then you will find yourself going out there 2 or 3 times per hour looking for more. Fun times!
