Komondor for LGD???

I am considering a komondor for a livestock guardian dog to help protect the chickens as well as goats, etc. Has anyone had experience with this breed in regard to poultry? Do you recommend a male or female?

Will work as will any lgd breed and several others not generally called lgd's. Do not over think it. Pair better than one. Maintenance of dog(s) may exceed upgrade cost of fencing.

x2! Komondor are expensive to buy and maintain, and way overkill unless you have a huge fenced property, no neighbors, and wolves and grizzlies to worry about. Are you familiar with the breed? Electrified poultry fencing is much more cost effective, along with a safe run and coop. Mary

I live in Arizona and I have a male Komondor, just over a year old. I have him in with my young bucks and he's been near my chickens since he was 10 months old but not housed with them. He's still a pup so he has to be corrected on occasion for wanting to play with the young bucks. He never hurts them he just wants to get them to run with him and sometimes he gentle puts his paw on them. They rear up and buck at him but never try to actually but him. They get along wonderfully.

I feel with a bit more maturity he would be great with the chicken as well. He's my first Komondor so I don't have a lot of experience but I absolutely love him! They can be very expensive but so can other LGDs, I was very fortunate and got an exceptional deal on him. I do sometimes think the coat may be a challenge but I also think that once he is fully coated it won't be that difficult. I think it's just important to start working with them at a young age to get them used to you kinda pulling their coat.

Currently and only temporarily we are living on an acre and he is only fenced in a big pen with the bucks. He does just fine, I do however want and believe he should have a much bigger area. Within a month we will be moving to 20 acres and as we fence more and more of it he will have more area to patrol. As far as barking goes, yes he barks as does any LGD. I correct him when he barks at the neighbors in their yards, this is very helpful as he is learning they have their space and he has his. I firmly believe that having an LGD doesn't give you the right to infringe on your neighbors peace and quite. LGDs are to protect our property when a threat enters the property not for innocent people passing by. The dogs can and will learn the difference. His barking is much less than it was a couple of months ago and yet nothing is bothering our livestock.

My only experience with these dogs is being bit on the butt by one! My friend had two of them and one of them was always sneaking around behind me to nip me. I was only in Jr High, so I was scared of her LOL. The other dog ignored me. Yay. They are very pretty dogs when their coats are kept up. Good luck with your dog.
