So some farms keeps the lights on to fool chickens into thinking that its sunny all the time and prevent egg laying from dropping off with shorter days of winter. If I were to try and keep my coop lighted longer in winter time do LED lights work. I know they are ignored by bugs and don't give heat, will chicken respond to them or just incandesent style bulbs.

I've had one of those fancy squiggly lights in my coop for almost two years now.

My hens ALWAYS lay better in winter though. light is on in the coop from 6AM to 8PM every day.

I have had wonderful luck with led lights on in my coop throughout the winter. plus there is no glass for them to get exposed to. never know what a chicken might do.

Thanks folks, even though we've just hit 80 degrees a couple times this week in NH, I want to plan ahead while I am finishing the coop.

Thanks Again,

I'm thinking seriously about using led lighting in my new coop. I am a fabricator in a sign shop and have access to used led light modules which we salvage out of signs which have been removed from defunct businesses, leftover oddball modules from jobs we build, etc. These are low voltage but high output modules, so low power consumption and less chance of fire and stuff. A 12 volt power supply in a metal transformer box will keep them more than safe. I already use them to light the inside of my cargo van, it looks like a refrigerator when you open the door.
