LA Banning fast food in the poor communities?

I know its to limit more fast food places, I am okay with limitations, but am I correct to say that these places also have healthier options (granted, I am not talking organic or excellent quality) than a "Big Mac and Fries"? I mean, all of these also have salads and such so people DO have options. To say that all these poor people are unhealthy because of the fast food places and lack of healthy food is ridiclous. They can still go to McDonalds and get a salad, but they CHOOSE not to.

I am upset at the bigger picture. Limiting or preventing new is just a small step toward the government banning things. It is not the governments place to tell us as adults what we can and cannot eat or where...and now that they have started doing this, where will it end? Its just another step on the road going downhill like someone said- communisim.

I'm glad a ban on new construction of fast foods is being put into place! The large majority of trash around Los Angeles is waste from fast food 'restaurants' (and I use the term loosely).

One cannot legislate how the populace will eat. The local elementary school gave free lunches to a majority of the children attending. Generally the sandwiches were thrown out with a bite or two eaten, carrot sticks tossed, and the fruit cups eaten.
What a joke!

As for trans-fat ~ of course the Governernator has NO business legislating this. But it's big government for ya! And with so many people expecting government to solve all the problems, you can just bet this piece of legislation will pass.

Unheatlhy foods are cheap?? Really????
Not in my neck of the woods. BK, Wendys, Taco Bell and Mc Donalds cost the same, if not MORE per meal than eating healthy "home made" meals. Hence the reason going to one of these places is a TREAT.
We stopped at BK on the way home from HD Saturday. For my family of three it was just under $20. I shudder to think what the driver of the Honda stuffed full of kids in the drive thru is handing the person at the window!
Sorry. You have the money to take your kid(s) out to a fast food joint a few times a week.. You have the money to feed them right. We have a container garden on our porch that has been providing us with tomatoes, lettuce and cucs. Inner city, "ghetto" and other families can do the same. It isnt hard. They just dont want to. Why should they? They get FREE health care!!!!!! They arent worried. Someone else will take care of them and their kids. There is NO excuse(unless there is a medical reason) for a child to be obese.

AAACKK!

People please! There is something those of us who have studied the poverty problem in America recognize: its called the poverty penalties. As an experiment we asked a local representative who made some of the very claims some of you do to TRY to find the right kinds of foods on the budget that denotes poverty level. He failed miserably. He was simply unable to do it - and he was trying VERY hard to make his points
a.) poor people refuse to exercise MYTH
Many, many poor people work very hard manual labor jobs and walk and carry heavy items, but many more live in situations where spending time outdoors is simply dangerous. The children cannot be allowed to play outdoors and they cannot afford gyms and pools. Don't start on public pools most cities public rec programs are only truly available to about a 3rd of their population

2.) healthy food is cheaper MYTH
Not in poor neighborhoods its not. Yes, fast food may be expensive, but healthy foods are often MORE expensive. fruits and veggies bring top dollar in the cities and are often of poor quality.

3.) the typical we;fare recipient is a black woman with multiple children who stays on welfare all of her life MYTH
The "typical" welfare recipient is a white woman with two children who remains on welfare five years or less - this is BEFORE welfare reform.

The poverty penalty puts poor people into a locked system. They cannot get bank accounts, they end up paying at check cashing places, they cannot get good rates on cars or car insurance so they either go without or pay through the nose for insurance and pay through the nose for public transportation. They get charged more on credit cards, bank loans, rent, etc etc etc......

Have none of you heard of the "nudge" factor? It isn't controlling people it is nudging them in a healthy direction just as Advertisers and businesses have done to us for years! Does a free market really mean that it is bad for the government to try to give people healthy nudges, but it is OK to allow business to give many many unhealthy nudges???

I feel a Milton Friedman was wrong rant coming on!
