I believe it is just for looks. I am not sure but my understanding is they used to do this for cock fighting. Not my cup of tea.

I have seen some pictures of LaFleche that have smooth combs up to the two "horns". My roo has alot of smaller points leading up to the two big ones.I wouldn't trim any roo if I didn't have to.


This pic is a month old and my roo has even bigger wattles now.

The comb of this roo, in a pic from Kycklingar's article, is quite different than my roo's.

i would say your roo's comb has something else in the mix. I have a v comb mix hen and she has a combo between the v comb ans a straight comb. Their combs should be smooth to the V. They do not dub their combs to make them this way.

What do I have! (I mean that retorically). I got them (as a gift) from a breeder that has combined "3 different american lines" Hmmmmmmm?

My La Fleche just have the two prongs plus the two little projections in the nostrils.

Cross breeds from La Fleche have a variety of additional features in their combs.

I have some trace on the ones I got from Mr. Urch. he says (and i believe) he has never mixed anything else with his and he has had them since the late 1960s so it could be that, like anything else, the combs on all of them aren't perfect. Do your La Fleche have any size to them? Mine are small. Does anyone out there have a strain that has some good size?

I'm on the other side of the pond, but 'size wise' I would say that mine are not the largest of 'large fowl' compared with my huge Brahmas, but are way bigger than my 'large fowl' Naked Necks. The La Fleche roosters I have are slim alert looking birds. The hens are more rounded, and both sexes weigh heavier than you would expect. The last rooster my husband 'culled' (I am not in to killing) weighed 7.5 lbs and was not yet fully grow, if this is any good indicator.

My roosters don't ever seem to be aggressive, but a recent one has taken over as alpha male from a huge Brahma.

When crossed with other breeds, they seem to grow very quickly.

The roo pictured above by mjgigax from the article by Kycklingar has very 'pink' ear lobes and I think (and am ready to be corrected!) that this is a breed fault and they should be nicely white. My roos have good clear white ear lobes and good 'horns', but I have some 'non-black' feathers coming in with some of them, which i'm sure is another undesirable trait. Oh well, maybe someday I'll get a really good one!
