Arwyn (my Angora doe) is not doing well. She delivered 11 days ago and the 5 remaining kits are fine. She is not.

The last few days she’s been losing weight, although eating voraciously (everything she can get her teeth on). Last night she even started chewing on the wood of the hutch holding her cage while I had the door open. So I put a new chew block hanging toy in her cage as the old one has been nibbled down to nothing.

But her belly has been swollen and warm for about 3 days now. No discoloration, and the kits are nursing fine and putting on weight.

I thought it was just that the kits were taking a lot out of her. but this morning when I went out to the cage she was not her usual self. Instead of greeting me, she just sat there, not moving, not acknowledging my presence at all and her food from last night was untouched.

I brought her some greens to tempt her. No response. I brought her some papaya to tempt her (which she usually runs to the edge of the cage and gobbles). No response.

She’s down to skin and bones other than her swollen belly this morning and just sitting there in her cage! I’m afraid I’m going to lose her if I don’t figure out what’s wrong right away.

At first I thought maybe it was the new chew block toy, but that’s remained untouched as well.

Right now she’s just lying down with her chin resting on the bed of greens I put in for her to eat, but not eating anything, just lying there. Not even alerting her ears to the sounds of the other rabbits in the other cages around her like she normally does.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Could she have mastitis? That will make her sick and not want to eat. It might swell up her tummy where her teats are.

She died as I got her to the vet. She had an 8th kit stuck inside, up high, couldn't birth. How she made it 11 days with an 8th kit in her I'll never know, but her having done that has given the remaining kits a better chance of survival. Now I need to learn how to be a replacement mother for them. And I need to learn soon as they'll need to feed again today.

Wow and I need kits to foster. Too bad we were not close. lol. My mom gave birth to three, but two were fetal giants that were born dead. One is living and it has to be taken out once a day for feeding so that it doesn't get too much milk, or it could die too.
I have been looking around for fosters. If you are near Columbus Ohio, I could help. :)

Unfortunately, I'm in North Carolina. I just brought the nest box into the house and set it up inside one of the dog kennels on my cutting table in the design room. I now have young chicks in the studio until they are old enough to go out in the pen, and baby rabbits in the design room. LOL Driving my 4 dogs crazy with the smells coming through the doorway!

Wow have fun. I will have chicks at the end of this week, as I have one momma on six silkie eggs. lol. And I have my bunny nest in the house too with my little bunny. It is my house though, always something as I breed birds. http://www.feathersnsong.com

I'm sorry! Where are you in NC? If you are in the western part of the state I may be able to help foster them for you ... I have a doe with only one surviving kit.
