If you were starting from scratch (pardon the pun) in your new coop, would you have a ladder style roosting system or parallel roost so that they are all on the same level?

I am not 100% sure but it seems like it is just your preference. The ladder style is what we did and it works great (given that all of the birds try to roost on the same rung

If you have space the chickens seem to all want to be at the same level. They like to snuggle close in one long line in my coop. Ladder style roosts are great for adding extra roosts in a smaller space. Both will work fine if you have a preference of your own, but if you asked the chickens they would probably say "all one level."

I agree that if you have lots of space, roosts on the same level would be great! I use laddered type roosts because my coop isn't deep enough for me to use dropping boards any other way. But all the chickens prefer to be on the highest roost, so if they're all the highest...

I started with a ladder roost but that ladder turned into just that, a ladder for them to get into the rafters of the coop. All my chickens sleep in the rafters but my silkie and one ameracauna who cant stretch out her wing(long story). They sleep on the roost in the brooder unless my silkie is broodie then they share the nest.
