Has anyone ordered lakenvelders from a hatchery? How big was the order of lakenvelders and how did they do? Was it the sliver or golden lakenvelders and what hatchery? Thanks for any information.

I have Silver Lakenvelders from a hatchery and a private breeder. The ones from a private breeder are a bit bigger, deeper in the body.
If the average person saw them side by side they couldn't tell the difference but a experienced chicken person could.
I am curious on the color of the golden Lakenvelder from a hatchery. I wonder if the color would be washed out?

I don't know on color. I just know that I am not having luck in the breeder department. The ones that hatch keep dropping like flys, and I have used three different breeders. So my main question is do they live if they come from a hatchery, say like you buy 25 chicks, how many actually live and how many die? I am trying to find out if there's just not enough genetic diversity in them due to lack of popularity, so not that many breeders.

I ordered 8 from McMurray the beginning of July. They don't list which color they are, but I'm assuming silver. We've lost two within the first week and maybe one more...we have them mixed with three other breeds, so I'm trying to remember what we've lost.

My friend and I placed an order with Ideal last year that included one Silver Lakenvelder for her. The order came to me and I kept her chicks for a few weeks before she got them. The SL did just fine as all the chicks except one different breed chick that was weak when it arrived.

I know this is not a lot of the breed but I could have just as easy lost that one SL that my friend ordered. It is a hen now and is just fine.

I wish you better luck. rebel

I have a single golden lakenvelder pullet from MPC. Initially she was frightened but now at 5 weeks, she flies up to sit on my shoulder or on my lap if I'm sitting. She is a really neat bird. I made sure to handle her several times per day and she is extremely friendly.

We had two silver lakenvelders from McMurray. One was weak from the get go but I think that was just the bird not the breed. The other one is almost 15 wks old now and she's a great bird! The best forager, not very tame, but she's interested in what you're doing. She hates my cats, always goes after them, so in that way she is brave :p I don't think the picture is working but if you go to my pictures on here in my signature there is some there.
