Lame duck

4 month old Buff duck seems to have dislocated or broken leg. This just happened I think she may have gotten her foot stuck between 2 boards and twisted her leg. May have over bent the leg backwards at the knee. I've called all my vets nobody does ducks one place that does doesnt answer the phone. She does get up and gimp around some with the other ducks but thinking I should separate her into a confinement pin. Only thing I have goin for me is my wifes a pediatric ICU nurse and does splints and things on tiny babies. I know this ain't a kid but should she try to splint it or just let the duck stay on bed rest.

Pics or video might help. If its definitely broken or even dislocated, I think a splint might be necessary.

Sorry to hear about your duck.



You’ll definitely want to move her into a soft bedded pen, which reduces her mobility for now. Could you quickly, but efficiently, and gently grab her and feel where it may have twisted or broke?

It's at the tarsometatarsus. That big joint feels like it bends way to far backwards. And the leg kinda flops out to the right when she walks.

I got her pinned up looks more like it may just be her foot. Her toes are bruised a little swollen. Maybe the sideways walk was compensation for the sore toes. I'll let her lay up alone a couple days see what happens with it. She was up getting after it with the others but she sits when they stop for any period of time.

I've had her pinned up over a week alone got her out today she can walk better than she was but still a little gimpy. I took pictures of her feet. She may have broke that toe the reason for the bad limp. She gets in and out of the pool with the rest of the birds I didnt see anything that showed signs of bumble foot she may just walk with a limp from now on. Circled toe is swollen but doesnt seem infected or anything.

Doing good. I never did anything with her what ever it was healed on it's own. There were a couple more that had the same problems I'm thinking all the wetness and rains kept their feet wet and made em have a slight bumblefoot. I sanded my chicken yard and kept them locked up a few days in there and kept them dry for several days and no more problems.
