Hi!
We are considering bringing a friend's lame duck(splay leg) to our flock. She was hatched with my flock if that matters. She has been inside their home for 3 mos now because she has splay leg and they were not aware of treatments.
Will she be ok outside? We have intro'd ducks before and are confident in that area but not sure of the lameness and her being outside. Any advice?

When you say lameness please explain? can she walk at all? a duck that sometimes shows illness or injury can be attacked by the flock. So you'll have to make a judgement call there. If she can get around okay then use the protocol you used when introducing others to your flock. She still might get picked on but hopefully it won't last.

Thank you. I actually have not seen her yet. I have been told her foot is turned in and she hobbles around. They put her in a tub to swim.

If they want to rehome, and your willing to give it a try then do. She may do fine with your flock and if she didn't any way you could give her maybe separate run right close to the one you use for your flock and maybe one of your laid back duck? that way she wouldn't be lonely. And she would still be able to see the other ducks?

I hope it works out, Bless your dd for wanting to do this. Many people care for handicapped birds, I had a Muscovy drake who for the last 2 years of his life couldn't walk well so to keep him safe from the other drakes and gander he had his own space outside where he and his lady friends stayed during the day and his own stall for the night inside the coop. every morning I carried him to his area and every evening carried him back in.
He could walk enough to get around in his area with food and water close and was a happy boy up until he passed away at 1 month shy of 12yrs. Sometimes accommodations can be made very simple. if needed. I have one of Ernies females still she is now 14. Her legs are weak but she still is independent ❤️I'll be ready to help her if I need to. Please let us know how it does.

Thank you for the blessings and thank you for sharing. It is good to hear of a success story! I will tell my dd and give her encouragement.
Thanka again
