Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice as my lovely Maran hen has been lame for a couple of weeks now.

She's two years old and otherwise seems very healthy. Her weight seems good, she's still alert, (very) keen on her food and going about her day like normal. Her only symptoms are a limp and swelling on her left hock.

I've tried isolating her from the flock to reduce her movement in case it's a sprain or something similar, however there's been no change as of yet.

There are a few things I'm suspecting might possibly be the cause:

- She's always been somewhat knocked-kneed. I wonder whether this could lead to arthritis or similar?

- She's recently had scaly leg mite, which I've been treating. The scales of the leg are now starting to look a lot smoother, but could the lameness be related to this?

- She was pecked on the leg (where the outer toe joins the leg) by a flock member a month or so ago. It wasn't a big injury but there was a little blood, leaving an open wound. Could it be an infection stemming from this? I've checked for bumble foot and there doesn't seem to be any of the typical signs.

I'll try to get a good photo if I can, though it's a little tricky as the swelling is mostly under feathers.

Any advice or insights would be warmly welcomed.

Thanks!

Hello! A picture would be really helpful, or a video if that's easier to expose the area.
From what you've described, one of my hens is experiencing something similar. Unfortunately the general consensus on her is Marek's, although she seems cheerful and is hobbling around, enjoying her food and dust baths.
I've attached a picture of my own, although I agree - it's difficult to get one which really shows the lump.
Does this look similar to your Maran?
