I have a 4 week old bantam chick. We keep it in our utility room under a heat lamp but my mam wants to turn the lamp off. Is it to early to turn it off. The house is quite warm with it being summer time and the room does get pretty hot at times. Do you guys think we could turn the light off. The chick has its wing feathers and all now and it doesn’t seem to be cold when we let it run around in the kitchen. What do you think???????

I know some one who has chickens who never had a heat lamp and they say their chickens turned out o-k. I think you should wait one more week and then shut if off. by then they should have enough feathers, but if you must, i would be ok to tun the light off.

On cold days if you choose to turn the light be shure to turn the light on, or they may freze:(

Hope this helps!!!!

Chicks
need to be under heat starting at 95 and dropping 5 degrees a week till fully feathered so at 4 weeks should be around 75 degrees, so if temp is above 75 you can turn the light off, but probably will need to turn it back on if the temp drops too low at night.

Do you only have 1 chick? You need more.

If you leave it on, watch the chick closely for signs of being too hot: a bit sleepy, lying around, not chirping much or running around much, staying in the coolest part of the brooder.

I could never keep mine as warm as the 95 starting recommendation -- they would crowd up away from the light and even pant.

I would change the bulb to a lower wattage. My chicks are the same age as your chick. I just use a 15 watt bulb. They seem to like their night light.
