I saw some of these in the British Poultry Mag, I forget its name, and they had some really pretty pinky dark, dark eggs. I just wondered if anyone on this list had any. The British birds are called something different, and I forget the exact name, but they are, I believe, Black Langshans.

I think this is what you mean.

They are Croad Langshan, a different breed to Langshan .
As far as I know there are no Croads in the USA

Didn't you cross a Wheaten Marans and an Australian Langshan and get eggs this color? Are you still working with these birds?
Do you have any photos of these eggs or are these the eggs pictured? I think this is very interesting.

I have a Splash Marans hen that lays a purplish tinted egg.....it is very chalky and matte finished compared to any other Marans egg, when wiped off with a wet cloth the egg color is very close to that of my other Marans, but then dries back to the chalky purplish color.
1st photo is of the Splash egg along with another Marans egg that doesn't make the grade, its on the left, both of these gals where culled to the laying flock.
2nd photo is right after they have been wiped off. Her eggs are the two biggest eggs in the front of the photo.

Well, that is very interesting. Ok, this is a dumb question--I suppose it isn't possible to import eggs from the UK? It would take too long to get here, I expect.

I guess what you said--it would make more sense to look for a Maran that laid a similar egg and then breed for it, or try a cross. I do have a few Cuckoo Marans, their eggs are nice, but I don't breed them.

Catherine~

It is possible to import eggs into the US, but there are many many hoops and regulations that must be jumped through and also it is QUITE expensive.

it would make more sense to look for a Maran that laid a similar egg and then breed for it, or try a cross.
As for that I am not sure....but it would be my guess that if a person had a bird that layed a similar egg one could try and breed for it but I wouldn't have a clue as to how or where to begin.
I just think that those eggs are beautiful and I personally wouldn't mind if I found some of them in the nest box. Wouldn't that be cool!
Hopefully Blackdotte will pop back in and extrapolate a little more on the possibilities for us.
