Okay everybody, I need a feeder with a large capacity. I have 40 chickens, and the five gallon feeder I have works really good. HOWEVER, I don't like having to fill it up every or every other day. I need a feeder that can hold a 50 pound bag of feed, and cheap to build. Go crazy all you creative people!

If you want to get crazy, you could get a drum or garbage can and convert it into a feeder. You'd only have to refill once a month!

I have 5 hens on one 5 gallon bucket and I fill it once every 4 to 5 weeks.

40 chickens.............. make 4 buckets and you will fill them every 3 to 4 weeks.

4 buckets will cost you no more than $12 plus 1 hour of your time.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

You can also put up to 3 holes around the bucket like the 1 hole in my instructions, so 3 chickens can feed at a time if you wanted.

You asked for a feeder that will hold 50 lbs. ONE of mine holds 25 lbs. So TWO of them would hold 50 lbs.

What does your current feeder look like? Is it like the one in this picture? If so, I bet a lot gets thrown on the ground and wasted....... Costing you $$$$

We have a large pvc pipe that is mounted on a pole and has a tray underneath. It holds a little more than a 5 gallon pail. We feed about 50 chickens, 9 geese and 8 ducks with this feeder.

I use one of these with a 5 gal pail:

With only 8 chickens I can get several weeks out of a filling. The video on the website shows a feeder made out of a barrel, so that would probably work for your setup.

One thing I did different was to hang feed pan from the bucket so they can't walk in it. It normally has food in it and if it was on the ground they always seemed to poop in it. With it hung from the bucket they can't get on it so the food stays clean until consumed, they can still peck the trigger and reach all the food. I've had it for several months now and love it.

An update for you all, I wound up putting an old hog feeder in the coop. It holds about 200 pounds of Feed and works great!
