I know that chicks...when they are full their little crops get large..but tonight on my 3 tetra tint chicks..they have large crops...It startled me when I noticed it...the bumps are large but soft..they are eating and drinking..I fed them scrambled eggs today...I introduced grit to them also...is it normal for their crops to be so large? Am I feeding them too much? I leave the food there all night..my other 3 australorp chicks also have larger than normal crops...Am I just being over anxious with them? I removed the food for the night..and will check them in the morning...but I have never noticed their crops being that large before...should I leave the grit in with them all the time..I only mixed it with their food..should I leave it in a dish for them to have full access to? Could it be due to the larger breed? Sorry about the questions....I have raised other chicks..but I got them when they were 4 weeks old..these little ones are 2 weeks...
Thanks

If your feeding them other foods besides their chick starter they need grit, put it into a separate bowl from their food and they'll take it as needed, check their crops in the morning and then post back and let us know what they look like, hopefully it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks for responding...I just spent the last hour with them...their crops seem to be a bit smaller...I put in a dish of grit for them and only half a dish of food...I will keep checking on them tonight....I think they just ate themselves silly after I gave then some eggs...I will update tomorrow...

The grit is a good idea, they'll be needing it now that they're eating things other than their food. You're wise to be cautious, but don't stress yourself out over their crops too much, they can get grotesquely large and still be within normal limits with a chick.

Best of luck with them, keep us posted!

This morning their crops are back to normal...I now have a dish with grit in it..I could not believe how big their crop use...one little girl looked like she was going to fall over....I will keep a close eye on them..but this morning they are all running around..playing chest bumping and fighting over the smallest piece of scrambled egg in the dish!
