My 19 month old Runner has started laying eye wateringly large eggs instead of normal size like her sister... I’m wanting to hatch a batch, and I candled them, they look normal inside, no egg inside another... why is she suddenly doing this?
I hatched from her and her sister’s eggs last year.

:welcome Is this something she has just started? I don't know why they will lay normal size then whoppers. Mine Runners and Buffs have done this but they are usually double-yolked and they don't do it often. Maybe use the other Runners eggs for hatching.

Normally she laid normal eggs in the past - last year... but this year, started a couple of normal sized, then none for 10 days... then these whoppers

Yeah, it’d be interesting... I don’t eat duck eggs, but a lady bought some from me and I haven’t seen her yet to ask...

That's huge coming out of a Runner, @DuckyDonna has been getting some whoppers out of her Runners lately too.

@DuVey, I've been getting some whoppers from my older girls. I have 8 older girls ranging in age from 4, 3, and 2 years old who didn't lay all winter but have started up again. I recently had one egg that was 3.5 oz, another 3.35, and 3.27 all in one day! I'm still getting big ones from the older girls but they seem to be tapering off to more regular-sized eggs now. Perhaps at the beginning of the laying cycle that just happens? IDK because it's not happened in the past.

I'm also having major egg-bound problems too even in my 5 younger girls. I give calcium gluconate for that and you should probably get some in case this happens to you. It works really well and it's best to have it on hand for when you really need it and you never know when that will strike. @Miss Lydia also suggested that I mix layer feed with the duck pellets so I did that yesterday. The layer has a lot more calcium in it so I'm going to try that and see if it helps with the egg-bound issues.

I even had my penciled girl lay a soft-shelled egg right in my lap. I thought she had pooped on my but the wetness kept growing and right between my legs was a runny egg. That was certainly a surprise! Lots of fun in my coop this spring!
