Hi folks. A friend cracked open an egg from my backyard flock and found a large hard lump. She says the egg contents were all yolk and this lump. It was hard and bumpy to the touch. I've searched online and here but haven't found anything similar. Ever heard of a lash egg but inside the shell? Pictures below show egg when 1st opened and another shot after rinsed with water to get a better look. We are fairly new and inexperienced chicken folk...just want to ensure our girls are healthy. 6 hens that are about 1.5 years old: 3 Barred Plymouth Rock and 3 Buff Orpingtons. They seem healthy/behavior appears normal. Only other issue that has been worrying us is that they all have bald patches. Ranging from bottoms (I miss those fluffy bottoms!) to backs/tail area and a couple of girls with small patches on wings. We have found no evidence of lice or mites. They eat 16% crude protein feed And fruit/veggie scraps. We occasionally provide scratch or dried mealworms for special treats. They have ample room in coop and run and roam the backyard most evenings and on weekends (only when we are home to supervise). We are supposing they are picking at each other but have not observed that behavior. Any ideas/suggestions re: strange egg or our birds of few feathers would be greatly appreciated!
