Hi there. As you can see in the photo, my day old chick has a large protruding lump on its bottom. It's lower then the vent and off centered - a little to the left. Anyone have a prognosis? Thanks in advance for your help

That looks like the last bits of yolk that hadn't absorbed completely. It looks like it's well on its way to drying up. The chick will most likely be just fine.

I hope you are right but I don't think that's it because it bleeds when the other chicks peck at it. And the days are flying by... it's not a day old any longer! It's at the end of it's second day so nearly 3 days old but the lump has not changed since day one.

Here is another photo so you can see how far it sticks out. I'm worried that if I don't keep it secluded then the other chicks will pick at it so much that it will bleed too much and cause infection and major distress.

I believe that is part of the umbilical cord and they do disappear in a few days to a week. I've had 2 spring chicks with that. You need to watch them so it doesn't get pecked. You could dab on a little blue or green food coloring with your finger which would hide the red color to prevent pecking. A product called Blu-kote does the same and has antiseptics in it.

It's been 3 days since I last posted about this chick. Here's an update. It has slowly declined and is now breathing heavily and appears unable to stand properly. Anyone have any suggestions?

Our first chick hatched today with something similar. I took a picture shortly after it was done hatching. Any information on what is wrong is appreciated I'd like to be prepared if this poor little one won't make it. Sorry the picture is upside down.
