chicken with curled toes a week ago has not shown much improvement with B vitamins added to food and chicken shoes.Toes are not as curled but one leg is splayed out . She had a little poo on her backside and had knocked over her waterer during the night so I decided to bath her to clean her up a bit. As I began to dry her I noticed a large mass( about the size of a half dollar coin and about 3/4 of an inch thick) on the thigh of the leg held close to her body. The mass is hot and a little scabby on the top . could this be maerks(sp?) disease. I also noticed another small lump on her breast. Does anyone know what this is? Are my other adult chickens at risk?

Wow, that doesn't look good. Sorry I can't help you with the answer. Is it possible that the lump on the breast is the crop? Good luck.

If she's been laying down, it's probably the chicken equivalent of a bed-sore. Clean it thoroughly and don't let the bird chill. Treat with a non-pain-relieving antibiotic ointment or preferably a creme. Keep her on very very dry bedding.

On the vitamins, if you've seen any improvement at all, the it was likely a deficiency. These things take time to heal. Continue the B vitamins (in what form are you giving them?) as well as probiotics. HOwever, I'd highly recommend a combination like Enfamil has a sometimes (though less often) curled toe disorders can be caused by vitamin A deficiency. ENfamil polyvisol without iron (see CVS stores) contains a good source of A, D, E, and riboflavin with enough oil tomake it count. 3 drops in the beak per day.

Yogurt will help the bird by providing bacteria which produce a broad range of B vitamins. Riboflavin is the top problematic one.

Curled toes in chicks are often not Mareks. Flaccid (floppy or loose) paralysis is the sign - not curling. Splaying legs can be, however, Tumors are as well, but this looks like a sore. The lump on the breast might be the same if not the crop.

And by the way, a week and slight improvement is on track. How old is this bird again? What is it eating and what had it been eating before?
