Has anyone got any experience with building and setting up a large natural pond for their ducks?

I have had ours now for 6 months, and we put in a large plastic pond for them, set up with a good pump and a large filter made from a water butt, it does ok, pull a few bits from the pump once a week, and clean the large filter once a month, which is a good size job but i thought it was better than daily cleaning, and i wanted them to have a good size bit of water to paddle round in, however now i wanted to see about going one further and putting in a large natural pond and trying to do away with the filter, just move the water around and let it filter itself maybe?

We have space to put something in that is around 30-40ft wide, so has anyone done similar and have any tips or tricks that you learned along the way? anything that you know will grow fast before the little terrors eat it all? plants and life! what kinds of plants or animals go well in them to try and make their own habitat and keep things ticking over?

As i say, my plan is hopefully to let the pond filter itself with the plants and animals, and just run something to move the water around a bit, like a waterfall so they can play under it too or something.

Any ideas and tips welcome :)

Can't help here but sounds like you have room to make a nice pond. I would like to do the same one day. Just not enough land right now. All I have is a plastic kiddie pool I clean once a week.
