OK, my first meat bird experience began with ordering 35 Freedom Ranger chicks. They are now 9 weeks old and I need to begin to introduce them to the freezer stage of their development. I've been reading up on different methods, watching Youtube videos, have purchased the equipment. This evening when I went to lock all the chickens up for the night I scooped up my test subject and placed him in a crate in the garage where the equipment is set up. He's one of the biggest of the roosters and I chose him because lately I've noticed that he's been walking kind of funny, sort of back on his heels with his feet really close together. I don't know if there may be something funny about his feet or whether it's just that he's been the bossiest of the bunch and has become too heavy for his legs. Anyway, although I've tried not to name them or tell them apart, his bossy, inquisitive attitude, size and glossy red color has given him the name "Big Red".
So, I'm hoping to go out there when it gets dark and he settles in for the night and do the deed before he even knows what's happening, least amount of fear in his part, least amount of drama on mine, but I'm not looking forward to this. I don't know if I'm making a mistake doing just one, but I figure if I'm going to learn on the job, I better start small so that any mistakes I make in the butchering won't be a big deal because I only have the one to do.
Wish me luck.
