So we are finishing up our new chicken run. We built the door/gate and my lovely husband (who is doing the lions share of the work thanks to my own medical issues flavoring up) decided to “just make it fit the space” instead of making it regular door sizes. So now we have this massive door, 42” by 96”! For reference on just how big I’m talking, in the second photo is my husband holding it up before we installed it, he’s 6’6”.
Now the issue is a latch. I bought a gate latch, but then we installed the gate on the fence post instead of the building like I had planned (it really works better this way). It also swings into the run, so the latch needs to attach to the wall.
I’m in complete brain fog and cannot think of what could actually work here! I do have these latches sitting in my cart…but not sure they’d do much but get in the way, and that gate is heavy! I really wanted a simple latch I could operate from both sides! If I installed this to latch on the inside (with the lever pointed outside), could I attach a padlock to the lever side? Other latch suggestions? We need to get the gals outside soon, they’re outgrowing their brooder. So, we are sort of rushing this run and once they have a secure place, will be adding a sort of “staging area” form the corner post across the front of the shed (their coop) so that I can enter and leave without the chickens getting out. So, this latch will be a second gate and the other will have a better latch system on it.
