Hi there,

I've been utilizing these forums since first getting chickens April 2016 and really appreciate the insight you all provide. I literally just realized I never have posted on here or even introduced myself so I figured it couldn't hurt. I live in Central Florida so the chickens go from panting and dust-bathing to running for cover when it suddenly starts pouring. My husband and I were newlyweds and building a chicken coop (first thing we ever have built) in the hot Florida sun for months with quickly growing chicks, and somehow didn't get an annulment or even kill each other. Success! We started with 4 hens: 2 Barred Rocks (Leela and Buckbeak), a white Cochin (Luna)(already been broody like a million times, but she is so darn cute!), and a Delaware (Daisy)(super reliable layer!). This spring we kinda intended to get some ducks, but instead in April I came home from my commute from school with two "Araucanas" that I'm pretty sure are Easter Eggers (Bird Person and Peach), a Rhode Island Red (Pidgey), and a Red Sex Link (Phoenix). Considering it's just my husband and I, I have no idea what we are going to do with up to 7 eggs a day. Yes, I say 7 because Bird Person turned out to be our very first rooster:barnie. I was hoping for 2 blue egg-layers but I guess he is still pretty cool even though he bites on occasion:tongue.

I also have a cat named Skimbles who likes to lay out in the sun with the chickens. He's kinda creeped out by their weird bird ways but they get along just fine. I laugh when people are shocked wondering why I'm not afraid that he might eat them. It would probably go the other way around lmao.

Anyway thanks for all the help as I've silently lurked and read a lot of useful info provided by all of you! :bow

What a wonderful introduction - it is so nice to "meet" you. I am glad to hear that the site has been helpful to you in your chicken adventures.

:welcome

Thanks for the interesting intro, I enjoyed reading it. Before moving to WY last year, we lived in central FL too. Please do check out the FL state thread, lots of nice peeps there.

Congrats on your expanded flock!

Thanks! I will be sure to check out the Florida forum. So did you end up moving with a flock? Always wondered about how that might go considering we aren't planning to live here forever.

Thanks! This site is a goldmine of information. Invaluable in planning our coop, raising chicks, "can chickens eat [insert snack here]?" moments of doubt, and always the first place we look things up whenever we have any problems. Seems like there's always someone on here who's been through anything that could come up.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take my flock with me. I found them a good home with a BYC member who took them all so they could stay together. I had enough to deal with driving cross-country pulling a trailer for the first time. I've since started a new flock here in WY with 6 chicks I got from another BYC member here in WY. Just one more perk for being a BYC member...we all help each other out!

:welcome and congrats on getting your own flock.

Sounds like the Chicken Math hit you rather early.

And glad you and your DH are getting along - I threaten divorce every time we have to build or improve our flocks home :lau
