If you are going to quilt by machine you will need a walking foot. Normally when you sew the fabric is moved along by the feed dogs which are the little teeth that jump up and down below your needle but because a quilt is made up of several layers you need to move the top fabric along as well which is what a walking foot dose. If you don't use one you get rucks of fabric against previously stitched lines.
BUT I did know a lady that when asked if she quilted by hand or machine replied " oh by hand of course! It's quicker....I don't have to unpick!"
You can also quilt by cheque book and send your quilt to be quilted on a long arm machine.
There are some excellent class's on a web site called craftsy, they cost about $20 but you can watch them as many times as you like and it's like having a lesson in your own home, also tutors will answer any questions you may have.
