Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Yes, this is only my third post and the first on this board, but I have been lurking for a while. I will get my first Ameraucanas this spring from Paul/Angela Smith, and yes I feel like I won the lottery.
I will be getting some blacks and 2 lavenders which I hope are two pullets. I am sure that at some point, I might want to breed. I have read some of the postings where if you mate black roo's and lavender hens you will get blacks, lavs, and splits. What are splits? Part black and part lavender? Sorry, but I had to ask. A picture would be even better. Or is it a black that has a lavender parent?
When you mate Lav and black you get 100% splits.... no Lavs and no blacks from that cross.

The gene that makes lavender is recessive so a split only has one copy and it does not EXPRESS so visually they are black and you can not tell them from reg black.

here is a chart to help if you a visual learner.

Thank you very much. Guess I better hope one of my lavs is a roo! If not, it'll be a while before I get any lav chicks. Would have to get splits first. Or, buy more lavs next year! There goes the chicken math.

Are all blacks the same? I've ordered some blacks from Paul Smith to breed with the blue/splash/black Ameraucanas I want to work with. Can they be bred to my Lavender pullet?

Somewhere in my brain I have a thought that the blacks in the blue/black/splash color grouping are gold based, but you want a silver base for the lavenders.

Can someone explain it for me?

Thanks.

Interesting question.... I know lots of breeders will not use Blacks from a BBS pen in a BLACK pen.... might be the same thing.... IDK.....

Hi everyone, I got two Lavender AMs last night and wanted to post here to stay updated and learn more (well, anything) about them. I have had chickens for one year now just to let you know how new I am to all of this. ;) I am by no means a showman but decided I wanted to try Ameraucanas out and found these as a pair. To me they are beautiful and I just love them already, they're both so sweet! Thanks for all the info here, I'll be reading for a while it looks like!

This is the type of question that might not get answered on a color specific thread or a project color thread. If you asked this on the regular ameraucana thread im sure you will get an answer.

Im curious about this question too

Hi all! We acquired two Lav AMs this last July and both ended up being roosters, we'd like to breed them to better the line but in reading through this thread I'm not sure if either are breeding worthy...so I'm asking for a critique of our boys. I was told they are from pips n peeps, Blehm & Shaffer lines.

The first one is Chester, to me he has nicer color overall and his comb is great but he is lacking in the beard & muff department, his body type is a little off to me and feather quality needs some work.

Next is Sonic, he was a late bloomer/slow developer and has some darker possibly undesirable coloring and banding in his feathers but better feather quality, his comb is not as developed as Chesters, he is larger than Chester and to me has a overall better body type and good muff & beard...of course this is novice and personal opinion.

So is either one good for a breeder? Critique away and thank you!

Interesting. I would love to know too. I can imagine one problem you'd have if the black is a black/blue split and introducing to your Lavs. I'm no expert though. Would love to know more :)
