Lavender Genetics Question

our blue flock now consists of 5 lavender orphingtons (4 pullets & 1 cockerel)
1 blue (cockerel) & 1 BBS orphington(pullet)
.
if we have other breeds of lavender chickens, & they accidentally mate will this keep the resulting offspring lavender??

we are interested in getting a few lavender wheaten ameraucanas & lavender marans
our goal is to be exclusive blues and lavenders in our flock.

We do even have a lavender bantam hen we hope the parental birds will maybe throw us a male this coming year so we can work with that paring too.

We plan to have the lavender birds separated by breed so we can watch the chicks that come from each separately and have a few for sale this coming year.

I was just wondering if lavender is over lavender will you get lavender offspring??

The BBS gene is totally different from the Lavender gene. The BBS gene is incompletely or partially dominant. I can’t remember the correct terminology. But if the BBS gene pairs up at that gene pair, you get Splash. If it splits you get Blue. If it is not present at all you get Black. So if you mate two Blue chickens you get some Splash, some Blue, and some Black.

Lavender is a recessive gene. For it to show up at all both genes at that gene pair have to be the Lavender gene. So if you mate two Lavender chickens, the offspring have to be Lavender.

Cool, Guess the lavanders get some new digs then...Off to the hardware store tomorrow for a little lumber and wire
