Lavender in coop - stupid question

I read that people put lavender in the coop or nesting boxes. I was wondering specifically how. Do you put whole sprigs of lavender or strip the flowers off and sprinkle just that?

I personally save the herbs for use in the kitchen.

I don't think it matters how you handle them. The chickens will rearrange things to suit themselves.
