Lavender Orpington project ....

matte- This sounds like a very interesting project. I think the mottled birds are beautiful. Where did you get your parent stock from?

So as not to throw Kathy's Lavender Orp thread off topic, I created this thread.

I just found this thread,so here are my Hinkjc Lavenders I got last spring.Sadly I lost the Roo and 1 hen to a dog in October.Ive been feverishly trying to find a handful more, but most I see are thinner and darker than mine. I love them light colored and fluffy

Hope I find some sooner than later.

Can someone explain to me why it is important to breed lavenders back to black. What happens if you keep breeding lav to lav?
Thanks. :)

To improve type, feather quality and size, among other things.

Breeding Lavender to Lavender does nothing to correct the faults that are prevalent within the project, outcrossing to good Blacks will help you correct different issues.

Originally last year I did little to hatch out anything from my one and only Lav cock. I seriously thought it would take years to put together a good type with a Lav color. I hatched out 3. One I sold for $10 as a pullet cause I thought she was going to be a splash. Then during the deal I realized this was one of my Lavs. She was going to be nice. That left me with a Black Lav split and this guy. I know many have seen his pics before. But took this today. He is getting near 8 to 9 months old. The deluge of rain does not do him justice. I will hatch many more this year. As usual I use the least likely hen. His mom is 1/2 Cuckoo Wyanndotte bred with Pure Black top notch Exhibition Black. Mom is a single comb Black. With a great tail and decent size. But anyway here is the one offspring from my Lav cock I have left from last year's breeding season.
Obviously he is a Blue Cuckoo. But his dad and mom will throw mostly Lavs and Blacks.

So breeding back to black will reduce the yellow (see roo)? He never used to have the yellow. Also, my hens are starting to turn brownish this winter. Though one hen that molted has returned to the pretty gray. Is it normal for them to get that dirty color?
