Lavender Orpington project ....

When I got home yesterday and let them out I found one has a nub toe! I called about it, took pictures & went to inspecting the others & 3 more have nub toes!

is this hereditary??

Seems to be. If you want some good Lavender chicks, visit our facebook page at Southern Heritage Poultry. We will be shipping soon. We have an English roo over 50% English Black hens that are split to Lavender. These produce the best feather quality for someone to start a flock with. :)

We are NPIP as well.

Oh wow thank you, & you have beautiful birds!:) I'm scared it is hereditary but I also googled it, & seen some pictures of frost bitten toes that looked almost identical. I don't know what to do, I've just spent so much on these!:/ and I googled the white in & on feathers & so far it says they could be a mottle?

Were they hatched outside? I would definitely contact who you got them from and see if they will help remedy the situation somehow.

No ma'am/sir, they were hatched inside in an incubator, & I think he said put outside at maybe 4 weeks old I can't remember. Is it possible they hatched eggs from hens that were too young thus not fully developed?? I had called them that evening I got home, they said they've never had a problem but I could bring them back & exchange them, but I'm scared they won't have any without defect:( I spent $120 plus about $50 in gas & about a 4 hour round trip, & now have to go back:/

When pullets begin laying, they're fine for hatching. We've never had any issues like that. Without more info, it's just hard to say. I'm glad they're willing to work with you on it tho.

Hi all!
I am borrowing a pair of lavender orps from a friend. They have amazing color ♡ problem is, their type is not quite there. I lucked out and found a beautiful young English black cockeral. He is not bbs lines.

Question; is the bird I would choose to use with the hen to improve type? If so, how does it all work?

Thanks in advance!

Type is what you need to concentrate on first and foremost. Color is the easy part. I wouldn't breed poorly type birds just because they have nice color, that will just set you back in your program.

To get the greatest number of lavender or blue chicks is it best to cross a blue hen with a black rooster or vice versa? or blue on blue?

Lavender and Blue are 2 different genes. As far as Lavender, to get the best feather quality you want to breed a Black hen and a Black roo that are both carrying one copy of the Lavender gene. Only 25% of their offspring will be Lavender, but they will have the nicest feather quality. If you breed a Lavender to a Black that has the Lavender gene, that is almost as good as far as feather quality, and will give you 50% Lavender chicks. If you breed a Lavender with a Black that has no copy of Lavender, you will get 100% Black that are all split to Lavender.

As far as Blue goes, in order to get the most Blue out of your breeding, you want to pair a Splash with a Black and you will get 100% Blue chicks.

Here are a few breeding diagrams.

went to the feed store last week ( Need I say more?) bought enough feed that the lady gave me a sweet deal on BO's .75 each, I bought eight, she said they were 90% sure they were all females...Was cleaning the brooder today and feeding them and noticed one ( I think they are 2-3 weeks old) is taller than the other 7 and has a comb starting!!! Can you say double fist pump!!! First time I have ever been exited one of my chicks turned into a male lol I'll try and get a picture of the one I think is a male and one of his hatch mates tomorrow...

Bought eight Buff orps from the feed store , this is the only one to get combs and waddles...About 2-3 weeks old, I'm thinking its a male
