Lavender Orpington project ....

400

We have a Lavender Laced Blue growing out. We plan on taking it back to our Black/Lavender split which has great lacing to darken the lacing on the Lavender offspring.

Anyone breeding English Black Orpingtons into HinkJC Lavenders? I have some splits coming up now and I thought they might improve body type and size into my lavender group after a generation or three. I would love to see pics of others doing this project. Thanks.

Most of the serious lavender orp breeders are doing exactly that. The offspring is beautiful.

I am still working on the Lavender Project. I have seen great improvement with each generation, but still a long way to go.

Hi,

I would love to join this particular thread for advice and to learn and share about the Lavender Orpingtons. Last year my daughter wanted to hatch some chicks for her 10Th Birthday. After she researched all the different kinds of chickens she choose the Lavender Orpingtons. She knew what she wanted and she couldn't be persuaded otherwise. (I tried.)

(Boy am I ever glad she stuck to her guns!) So we ordered what was listed as 7 rare Lavender Orpingtons from e-bay. (We did not know about this site.) Amazingly, even with our mistakes 3 eggs hatched, it was so cool even though we only got to witness one actual hatching. (Which we were able to film.) My daughter had her favorite right from the start and named her Collette. Out of the 3 she ended up being the only hen.

The two roosters, Rocky (he was the one we saw hatch, was so named because of the way he came out of his shell according to my 7 year old son.) the other was named Ricky once he started to crow. (We had high hopes he was a she for the longest time, as he took longer to crow.) That is the short story. The three lived in harmony for the longest time. Like in our bath tub, to a large dog kennel in the kitchen to finally out in the garage in a make shift enclosure as we did not yet have the coop. Anyway, they spent so much time living with us, they just want to always be with us. We were scared to let them free range as we have a dog, and a cat. (Personally I was more concerned about the cat. He is such a hunter/scraper and very naughty, although he is finally turning into a sweet heart.) So in December of this year we finally let them free range and everybody got along great! This was their first free range outing. It was amazing how they and all the other animals all got along, but it wouldn't last for long once they were free ranging. Rocky was top rooster but Ricky wanted the title, and soon they were fighting. It got so bad we feared one would die, so we had to separate them. We knew we would have to get rid of one, and we did. A wonderful lady purchased Rocky. So, here we are with one hen and one rooster, they will be 1 May17Th. We have their eggs in the incubator due to hatch in 7 days! We can't wait. They are the friendliest chickens ever. We have 12 acres for them to range and every time they hear us open the door or come home they come running, it is the funniest site to see.

(Hmm, Ricky, I don't think they are home.)

Then we wait!

Wow Lucky Chick, what a huge and beautiful rooster you have! I think you have wonderful Lavenders. So are you trying to create your own blood line by mixing? I don't understand. He a black Orpington (with very pretty green feathers) that you are breeding to already Lavender hens, and if so do you have any pictures of his babies? What is the benefit of using a black instead of another non related Lavender? I would love to learn more. I know last year the add read "rare" Lavenders but I have to wonder about that, are they really? Even where I live, a very small town there are adds on craigslist selling Lavenders now. To my untrained eye they look like the real deal. What is the body type I should be looking for, and do these two display the correct type? I can't even imagine them getting any bigger, pictures just do not capture their size, even the hen is huge. I am no breeder that's for sure, but these two chickens we ended up hatching are so wonderful that we are desperately hoping for some more hens from them as they have the best temperaments ever.

Does anyone know where in north east Pennsylvania there are Lavender Orpington chicks for sale? I am really wanting one (or two, three!)! Any info would be greatly appreciated!:D

Same here, in WV. I haven't really looked all that much but I'm pretty sure if I came across some I'd have a hard time resisting. :)

Hi,

Last year when we were looking for Lavender we couldn't find any locally either so we did e-bay. Even with our mistakes we had 3 out of 7 hatch. Pretty good, seeing we made some serious mistakes in what should have been lock down time.

Wish I could be of more help. Right now we have 4 in the incubator and I keep rotating out the eggs in the basement to put under Collette once she goes broody again. They truly are great chickens. I honestly can't begin to explain how they want to be with us, all the land they have and they choose to stay around the house hoping we will come out. Once Collette started to lay she lays one a day pretty much everyday, even in the winter. (Unless of course she is broody.) I just can't say enough good things about them. Even now as I type they are pecking at the window to come in, silly chickens.
