He might be of use if you wanted to work on Isabel Orps- the Yellow leakage would be desirable, but you'll want more. If he's super typey, you could find some gorgeous Buffs, like Jody & Charlie's, and go to town!

Are you the one with the Isabels I've been chatting with through ebay? If you are I'll PM you. I'm krazymazie on ebay. Been looking at exhibition Buff Orps just because I love the Buffs but space is an issue. I would have all the Orp colors if I could.

I think the Isabel color is lavender with buff hackles? Like a Porcelain without the chevrons. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Danny, many colors matched up to lav in the first generation will produce a black or mostly black bird. This is because of the black base of a lavender bird (combined with whatever the color is you've matched it to) and lav becomes recessive (if not matched to a lav bird). You won't see lavender or any patterns until 2nd generation at minimum. What colors did you try?

Actually I did with cochins but I assume its the same genetics. I did columbian, mottled, buff columbian, mille fleur, wheatenpartridge and brown red. All birds are separate and all mostly black. Some are leaking a little silver or gold.

Yes, that sounds about right for those colors. I did several of those and had the same outcome on first generation. You have to think of your lavender bird as a black bird in determining what the first generation is going to look like. I found that the easiest way to understand it. You can also use the chicken calculator to try to help make some estimated outcomes on your pairings. http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

Thank you, Beth and Hinkjc.... So far, no more losses today. Still no word back from the breeder either. I am not sure what to do. I saved a couple of the dead chicks in case I decide to send them off for necropsy, but I really am more inclined to think this is something that happened in transit, rather than disease. It so heartbreaking though to go from 14 to 5. The five that are left are at least showing signs of being more active and eating/drinking.
