I am starting a new project I have 2 Self Blue Old English Game Bantam hens from Ideal, They just began laying and I put them with a Black Rosecomb cockerel and I know they F1 will be Black but I was wonder how long you guys think it will take to get their type back? Also am I correct about this.....

F1 - I breed them back to a Self Blue or ??? Im confused...

To regain body type breed in the following cycle

Rose comb to OEGB = F1 black

F1 to F1= select a self blue F2 ( 1in 4 should be self blue)

Self blue F2 to Rose comb= BC1 black ( BC= back cross)

BC1 to BC1 = BC2 self blue ( 1in 4 should be self blue)

self blue BC2 to rose comb = BC3 black

BC3 to BC3= BC4 1in 4 should be self blue

Stop back crossing and start breeding self blue to self blue when you get the type you want. You may get the type you want in the BC2 generation.

You might get the type back after the second out-cross to black rosecombs, but I've found the OEG type pretty stubborn. I'd probably do a black/lavender cross one more time to get the really nice rosecomb feather type and proper head characteristics and then go from there.

You'll have to see how it goes though. Two outcrossed for sure, and maybe three for good measure. It is going to take some time though, so be prepared for the long haul.

Cheers,

Is there anything to look for, specifically, when choosing an oegb for crossing with rosecombs? There are lots of breeders out there and they vary quite a bit. I was wondering if certain traits could bring back rosecomb type faster.
