How long is the 'shelf life' of a bag of feed? Assuming it is stored in a dry space and left unopened?

I only have 6 birds -- it would take quite a while to go through 10 bags! Just wondering in case I ever run across a deal like you did.

I'm not positive on the shelf life of feed though I've come across a thread on the BYC mentioning not storing more than 3mo. in the heat of the summer and 6mo. in the winter. Take into account where you buy your feed and time spent on the shelves/floor there. I happen to have about 40 chickens + 2 ducks so go though quite a bit of feed a week. Oh yes, I remember the day when I only had a few chickens and they went through a bag of feed every 3 wks or so....... yep, yep, yep those were the days.

I have read alot in this forum about layena feed
what are the pros and cons
I now get my feed at tractor supply and would like to find a more natural feed for my chickens
they are 12 weeks old
