long story short.....
feed store was closed, I have layer feed, will this work for chicks less than a week old just until tomorrow? Will layer feed harm them if they only eat a little bit? thanks in advance for any help you may provide

i say yes. i fed it to mine when the same thing happen to me except i fed mine it for a few days. however i have been told by someone on here NOT to give it to them because it can hurt them. all i can tell you is i used it and something seems better than nothing. i still have all 25 of my chicks. if you dont want to chance it you could try to crumble up some bread really small. i dont think that would hurt them but i dont know for sure.

It will keep them from starving but switch to grower starter as as possible. The extra calcium in layer feed can build up in their systems and damage their kidneys. They are not laying so they do not use it up. Also the protein is lower in layer feed than starter grower. Welcome to byc. !!!! Jean

You could mash up some egg yolks (from hard boiled or steamed eggs) to feed them instead of using the layer feed.

Hope this helps!
