I'm not sure what Purina "incidents" you are referring to. Purina makes good feed. So does Nutrena. I've used both with success. Kalmbackh has a strong following here on BYC, another good feed. What "filler" are you talking about.
I assume you mean "
Scratch & Peck", not Cluck and Peck. Its mostly an Organic line, of course its expensive - Niche Market, higher input costs, meets minimal nutritional targets. You are paying for what's not in it, rather than paying for superior nutritional numbers overall.
I'm not familiar with anyone using
EarthFirst feeds here on BYC, though surely there must be some. Compared to the Scratch & Peck, it also meets minimum Methione recommends (0.3), has slightly better Lysine (0.75 vs 0.7). The fat and fiber numbers for both are w/i acceptable ranges, both use pre-mixes so I assume the bottom of the label (vitamins, trace minerals, etc) are acceptable.
If Organic isn't critical, you could also look at the
Nutrena Naturewise Layer feed. A little higher fiber, which isn't optimum but is acceptable, the same decent Lysine number (0.75) as the Scratch & Peck, better Methionine than bScratch & Peck or Earthfirst, again a vitamin premix. Should be cheaper - due to sales volume. The
Kalmbach is better still nutrionally, but more expensive.
Purina's Layena crumbles are nutrionally essentially identical to the Scratch & Peck, but of course NOT Organic. Not even non-GMO.
