Layer feed switch?‏

My girls are now 5 months old (or will be in a couple of days) but haven't started laying yet. Their combs are turning red, so that's a good start. Are there any pitfalls and/or advantages to switching them over to layer feed already, or should I wait until I see an egg show up?

18 weeks is the recommended age for layer. Even if they aren't laying yet it will get their bodies ready for when they do start.
