layers and meat chicks

Chickens are all new to us, but we are planning to get a few layers (4-8) and also want to go some meat birds for the family. We have the small barn for the goats in which we will be putting the coop in, incorporating. As we will only need a place for the meat birds for 8-12 weeks, should we just plan to have a separate section for them, and not let them mingle with the layers and the goats?

Meaties should have their own space, if only to keep the more active birds from picking at their bald spots.
